Fine Art Photographer of the Year

fine art nude in cumbria and the lake district

I was very pleased to be awarded the Fine Art Photographer of the Year 2011/2012 award at the recent Master Photographers Association NW England Regional awards presentations in Bury, Manchester. I also picked up the silver award for Fashion & Beauty photography with an image shot to promote the KAOS theatre groups  production of  Cabaret.

Followed by 3 bronze awards, in Contemporary Weddings, Childrens Portraiture and   Location Portraiture.  These were the highlights, with very stiff competition this year from really strong photographers. I also managed to collect a total of 21 merit awards across various categories, including 3 or 4 each in fine art, reportrage weddings and location portraits.

It was a thouroughly enjoyable day, presided over by 2 excellent and knowledgeable judges, Richard Dutowksi and Paul RG Hayley. Richard gave an insightful seminar on the art and power of portraits and Paul turned the clock back with his slideshows from the falklands war, where he was one of only 3 photojournalists who managed to sail with the task force.

It was a powerful and poignant show on the eve of the 30th anniversary of a pointless war.

lake district art nude photo shoot

lake district and cumbria art nude photography

This client was perfectly happy to have her art nude shoot in the  lake district landscape photographed in February! which obviously marks her out immediately as a very brave lady. Not for getting her clothes off, because as many other clients have found, after the first couple of minutes, you forget you are nude and it becomes just about the images, and suddenly it’s very easy indeed. No, the biting cold february wind she endured was what marked her out as a brave lady! So well done Joanne, you were fabulous and your images are really beautiful  Here is the sneak preview for you I promised.

Lake District calendar girls

Well, its been a long and exciting project, and is now rapidly coming together.

Moving mountains for MS is the name of the fine art calendar we have been shooting for the past year and will be launched at the preview night for the touring exhibition of the images at The Treeby and Bolton Gallery in Keswick on tue 7th september, from 7pm till 9pm.

You are welcome to join us and the calendar girls there to celebrate the launch.

Friday night saw us getting our group shot  in the pouring rain…well done to a bunch of very tough and  brave ladies  ranging in age from 30 to 70.

We have created an art nude calendar based in the lake district using  models who have Multiple Sclerosis and the family and friends of MS sufferers.

The project was the brainchild of  Sue Hope, whose daughter woke up one morning blind, the first indication they had that she had contracted MS.  Luckily her sight returned after a few weeks, but the disease brings a whole host of other conditions and side effects.

The calendar features the ladies in various locations of the lake district, in all seasons of the year. I knew that the original calendar girls idea had been copied ad nauseum so wanted a different twist;  I decided on  a fine art nude project.  I didn’t want the images to be titillating or “benny hillesque”,  I wanted them to reflect the beauty and resilience of normal everyday women, in sympathy with the hills,  stone, water and woods that they live amongst.

The girls have been brilliant, and I would like to give them a public thank you for their patience and courage in some of the poses and locations I have put them through.
