First double Associateship in the UK

Last week was the annual qualifications judging day for The Master Photographers Association.

This is when photographers hoping to upgrade their qualifications must present a panel of work consisting of 20 images in the discipline they wish to achieve the qualification for. It usually involves one to three years of work until you have assembled a panel that sits together and can demonstrate a distinctive style. The failure rate is very high and the qualification is not widely held.

I took the unprecedented step of entering two panels simultaneously, one in weddings and one in portraits, working on the assumption that as I am both a wedding and a portrait photographer, I should be able to demonstrate the mastery of my craft in each discipline separately. Both panels were based on work undertaken in the last year.

As the two photographers immediately before me both failed, it was with a lot of trepidation that I laid out my panels when my time came.

Both panels passed with flying colours and I became the first ever photographer to achieve two associateships simultaneously, and am the only photographer in the UK to hold both distinctions.

The panels were both based on the landscape of the lake district and were both in black and white. The wedding panel can be seen by clicking on the read more link below.

The portrait panel is based on the work I did onthe MS Calendar project, shooting art nude portraits of local women either with MS or family/friends of MS sufferers. I’m keeping it under wraps for the moment because I want folk to buy the calendar when it launches on sep 7th at the Treeby and Bolton art gallery in Keswick. I will share it some time in the future, although many of the images can be seen at the accompanying exhibition in the gallery.

Jodie and Charles’ Ullswater wedding

I am finally biting the bullet and starting to catch up with blog posts, its been so busy the last few months they have fallen by the wayside.

And what better way to start off with the Anglo American wedding of Jodie and Charles, who were married at St Peter’s in Martindale with the wedding reception at the lovely Rampsbeck House Hotel.

Jodie learned to sail on Ullswater as a child, and a friend of her fathers put himself and his beautiful old boat, The Misty Lady at the couples disposal as a water taxi service to across the lake and back between the hotel and the church.

Below is a short show of the wedding highlights, if you would like to see the full wedding click here for our lake district wedding gallery to be informed as soon as the images go live.

A lake cruise was had by all after the service on the MV Raven from The Ullswater Steamer Co.

and then back to the rampsbeck where the marquee and the catering were provided by the fabulous Sarah Baker of Bakerwood Marquees.

Lake District calendar girls

Well, its been a long and exciting project, and is now rapidly coming together.

Moving mountains for MS is the name of the fine art calendar we have been shooting for the past year and will be launched at the preview night for the touring exhibition of the images at The Treeby and Bolton Gallery in Keswick on tue 7th september, from 7pm till 9pm.

You are welcome to join us and the calendar girls there to celebrate the launch.

Friday night saw us getting our group shot  in the pouring rain…well done to a bunch of very tough and  brave ladies  ranging in age from 30 to 70.

We have created an art nude calendar based in the lake district using  models who have Multiple Sclerosis and the family and friends of MS sufferers.

The project was the brainchild of  Sue Hope, whose daughter woke up one morning blind, the first indication they had that she had contracted MS.  Luckily her sight returned after a few weeks, but the disease brings a whole host of other conditions and side effects.

The calendar features the ladies in various locations of the lake district, in all seasons of the year. I knew that the original calendar girls idea had been copied ad nauseum so wanted a different twist;  I decided on  a fine art nude project.  I didn’t want the images to be titillating or “benny hillesque”,  I wanted them to reflect the beauty and resilience of normal everyday women, in sympathy with the hills,  stone, water and woods that they live amongst.

The girls have been brilliant, and I would like to give them a public thank you for their patience and courage in some of the poses and locations I have put them through.

James and Louise’s wedding at St Andrew’s,Penrith and Rheged near Ullswater

James and Louise had great weather for their wedding recently, and james sprung a surprise on Louise that definitely raises the bar for romantic grooms everywhere :)

During his speech at Rheged he wheeled out a 4 ft high slab of rough granite, onto which he had carved a poem to louise by hand…all 50 hours worth!

Now thats a labour of love. The fact that they live in a flat didn’t deter James at all, he just said its a promise they will have a garden one day :)

Lisa and Andrew’s wedding photography at Langdale Chase Hotel, Windermere.

lake district wedding photographers, windermere and the langdale chase

Lisa and Andy were married recently at one of the best locations in the lake district, the beautiful Langdale Chase Hotel. It was a very intimate occasion, with under 20 guests, including their five children, who all lit a candle after the ceremony to symbolise the coming together of two families.

Andrew turned out to be a complete romantic, not only did he spring a surpise on Lisa after the service by taking her out on the lake in a rowing boat for some quiet time together, he also presented her with a book of poems he had written for her at his speech!

Davide and Katia had an outdoor ceremony at a well known nature reserve on the outskirts of Milan, the ceremony was in English and Italian, as Davide’s mother is English, although she has lived in Italy for almost 40 years now. Davide is an illustrator and animator and he and his new wife now live in England. Triple Finalist In Kodak Wedding awards 1st round!

Wow,  I’m  absolutely over the moon, the results are in from the first round of the very prestigous Kodak Wedding Photographer of the Year Awards. 5 finalists were chosen from over 4000 entries from professional photographers all over the UK, and these will join another 5 from the second round judging in September to make the top 10 , from which the overall winner is chosen at the photography “oscars” in Birmingham in October this year.

I am very proud to to have an unprecedented THREE of the five finalists places in this first round! I don’t think this has ever happened before, and coming on top of my sweeping success’s at the recent NW England Photographer of the Year Awards makes me feel really pleased if  a bit overwhelmed :)

Not only that, but one of the other finalists is a fellow Cumbrian photographer and colleague, Steven Taylor.  He is probably the only other photographer in Cumbria apart from myself who can shoot the  difficult to master genre of documentary/reportage wedding photography, in the sense of genuine storytelling and critical emotion capture.

( I feel a blog post coming on about this subject actually :) )

I was really pleased to have made the finals of the kodaks in both wedding and portraits last year, I certainly didn’t expect to have three in this years finals!!!

The clients whose images were placed each win a kodak camera, from kodak..and if one of my images takes the overall title, they will win a £1000.

It has spurred me on to try and get a place in the second round as well, so if you haven’t filled in an entry form and you’re one of my brides from between August 2009 and this July, and you would like the chance to win a £1000 or a kodak camera, get in touch.

Here are the 3 winning images, the first one was from a wedding at The Langdale Country Estate, and the the second two were from the first wedding ever at The Overwater Hotel near Uldale last year, with their brand new wedding licence.

Dawn and Mike’s wedding at The Skiddaw Hotel, Keswick

I had the pleasure of shooting a very old friend’s wedding a few weeks ago in Keswick’s Skiddaw Hotel.

julia bradbury in lake district wedding photography

Mike is a greenkeeper at Keswick Golf Club, but we used to share a house and work together in the photo lab in Keswick about 20 odd years ago. He does seem to have less hair than I remember :)

Speaking of hair, Jingles, the keswick hair salon run by Sharon Thompson did a great job, especially considering they had 7 bridesmaids plus a bride to deal with!

The Bride, Dawn, works for the very long established Edwin Thompson and Co,  Keswicks premier Estate Agent and Land Managers. Funnily enough the day after Dawn’s wedding I was shooting the wedding of another Edwin Thompson staffer Jody Lauder, who is based in the windermere and preston offices. Jody’s images will be blogged in the next week or so.

Here are some highlights from the wedding day, the complete set of wedding photographs can be seen here at our lake district wedding photography gallery.

North West England Master Photographer of the year.

Monday night saw the presentation of the North West England Regional Photography awards, with entries from photographers from Cumbria, Lancashire, Cheshire and North Wales, even some from Dumfrieshire! This is the regions most prestigous event and is run by The Master Photographers Association. The judge was triple fellow and the mpa chairman of qualifications, Kevin Wilson.

I was lucky enough to be highly successful, winning a total of 18 awards and the coveted Master Photographer of The Year overall title.  I also came away as the Creative Wedding Photographer of the Year, the Reportage Wedding Photographer of the Year, the Under 5’s Portrait Photographer of the Year and the Pet Photographer of the Year.

I was really pleased that images of mine won 3 of the 4  awards in Reportage Weddings, but then nearly fell off my chair when I realised I had won every one of the 5 awards possible in the Creative wedding category!

A big thank you to all our clients who trusted me to do my own thing and create award winning images like these :)
